Lá 'le Bríde

1st Feb 2021

I hope you have all had a lovely St Brigid's Day.

Traditionally, in the Celtic calendar, St Brigid's day is heralded as the first day of spring, when we begin to prepare for the brighter and longer days ahead.

It is a day associated with many stories, songs and customs. If we had been in school today many pupils would have been busy making St. Brigid's crosses. I hope some of you managed that today at home. Remember to hang your Brigid's cross over the door as it will keep your home safe for the year ahead.

The senior pupils would have learned the beautiful hymn 'Gabhaim Molta Bríde' and the younger children would also probably have sung 'We sing a Song to Brigid'. These are two lovely songs which tell us about Brigid. I hope you got a chance to listen to or sing these songs at home today.

As the great Mayo poet, Antoine Ó Raifteirí wrote, let us look forward to the lengthening days of spring when we will be able to 'raise our sails' and go forward with hope into the summer!

"Anois teach an earraigh,

Beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh

'S tar éis na féile Bríde ardóidh mé mo sheol".
