Autumn and Halloween Fun in Seomra a Dó

28th Oct 2020

All of us in Room 2 had great fun celebrating the arrival of autumn. We enjoyed an autumn walk
looking at the falling leaves and the changes in their colour. We gathered a collection of
leaves, nuts, acorns, cones and conkers for our nature table. We enjoyed painting autumn
trees, using pointillism techniques. We read and listened to stories about hibernation and
constructed our own funky hedgehogs!
We had a great week before midterm celebrating Halloween! We learnt all about the Celtic
traditions around Oíche Shamhna. We made spooky bats, using chalk pastels and
constructed witches using 2-D shapes. We read ‘Room on the Broom’ and designed our own
magical brooms! Our classroom was transformed into a witches’ spooky spell lab where we
added snake venom, eyeballs, worms, rats amongst other disgusting ingredients to the
cauldron! We all had 'terrifying fun'!
Maths Week this year was Halloween-themed with a range of games including: ‘Reach for
the Stars’ dice game, ‘Picking Apples’ strategy game, ‘Create a Monster’ dice game and
‘Roll and Colour’ fun!
As well as all this, we participated in the Parish Council’s scarecrow competition. Poor
Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall and was reconstructed into a scarecrow! He was
accompanied by our class pumpkin farmer!
On Friday, we all thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in our Halloween costumes and
participating in the school parade. Well done Senior Infants and First Class and enjoy a great rest during the midterm week before we start back into the second half of the term.
